Klasifikácia nákladov: priame a nepriame náklady, fixné a variabilné náklady

Types of costs: direct and indirect costs, fixed and variable costs

Ing.

How the topic is built: 120 minutes in three blocks. Block 1 – Lecture explains how we sort costs: by whether we can link them to one service (direct and indirect), and by how they change with the number of patients (fixed, variable, average variable). Block 2 – Practice trains this with examples from easy to hard. Block 3 – Case study uses everything on one model clinic.

Po prednáške by ste mali vedieť:After the lecture you should be able to:
  • povedať, čo je náklad a prečo ho triedime,
  • rozlíšiť priamy a nepriamy náklad a rozdeliť nepriame náklady na výkony,
  • rozlíšiť fixný a variabilný náklad a vypočítať celkové náklady,
  • vypočítať priemerné fixné, priemerné variabilné a priemerné celkové náklady,
  • vysvetliť, prečo „priamy“ neznamená „variabilný“.
  • say what a cost is and why we sort costs,
  • tell a direct cost from an indirect cost and share indirect costs among services,
  • tell a fixed cost from a variable cost and calculate total cost,
  • calculate average fixed, average variable and average total cost,
  • explain why "direct" does not mean "variable".

Blok 1: Prednáška – ako triedime náklady

Block 1: Lecture – how we sort costs

1.1 Čo je náklad

1.1 What a cost is

Koľko stojí jedna kastrácia?

How much does one neutering cost?

A dog owner asks: "Why does neutering cost €160 when the stitches cost only a few euros?" The answer is in costs. Neutering does not use only material. The clinic also pays rent, equipment, wages, electricity and software. To set the right price, a vet must know what costs there are and how they behave.

DefiníciaDefinition Náklad je hodnota toho, čo ambulancia spotrebuje, aby poskytla službu – materiál, práca, energia, používanie prístrojov a priestorov.A cost is the value of what the clinic uses up to provide a service – material, work, energy, use of equipment and rooms.

JednoduchoSimply Náklad = čo nás služba „stála“.Cost = what the service "cost us".

Príklad: pri očkovaní psa spotrebujeme vakcínu (12 €), striekačku a rukavice (1 €) a 15 minút času veterinára. To všetko sú náklady.

Example: when we vaccinate a dog, we use a vaccine (€12), a syringe and gloves (€1) and 15 minutes of the vet's time. All of these are costs.

1.2 Dve otázky, dve triedenia

1.2 Two questions, two ways to sort

Teória

Theory

Náklady môžeme triediť mnohými spôsobmi. V tejto prednáške nás zaujímajú dva, lebo každý odpovedá na inú otázku:

We can sort costs in many ways. In this lecture we look at two, because each answers a different question:

Otázka 1: Komu náklad patrí?

Question 1: Who does the cost belong to?

Vieme ho presne priradiť jednému výkonu (napr. jednej kastrácii)?

Can we link it exactly to one service (e.g. one neutering)?

priamedirect nepriameindirect

Používame pri tvorbe ceny (kalkulácii).

We use it to set prices (costing).

Otázka 2: Ako sa náklad mení?

Question 2: How does the cost change?

Rastie, keď príde viac pacientov, alebo ostáva rovnaký?

Does it go up when more patients come, or does it stay the same?

fixnéfixed variabilnévariable

Používame pri plánovaní a rozhodovaní (bod zvratu, ďalší pacient).

We use it to plan and decide (break-even, one more patient).

Dôležité: ten istý náklad má vždy dve „nálepky“ – jednu z každého triedenia. Napríklad vakcína je priamy a zároveň variabilný náklad.
Important: the same cost always has two "labels" – one from each way of sorting. For example, a vaccine is a direct and also a variable cost.

1.3 Priame náklady

1.3 Direct costs

DefiníciaDefinition Priame náklady vieme presne priradiť jednému konkrétnemu výkonu. Vieme povedať: „Toto sme minuli práve na tohto pacienta.“Direct costs can be linked exactly to one specific service. We can say: "We spent this on this patient."

JednoduchoSimply Vidíme ich „na pacientovi“.We can "see them on the patient".

Výkon, ktorému náklad priraďujeme, sa v ekonómii volá nositeľ nákladov. V ambulancii je to zvyčajne jeden výkon: jedno očkovanie, jedna kastrácia, jedno RTG.

The service we link the cost to is called the cost object. In a clinic it is usually one service: one vaccination, one neutering, one X-ray.

Priame náklady – príklady

Direct costs – examples

  • vakcína pri očkovaní
  • šijací materiál a anestetikum pri kastrácii
  • RTG film / snímka pri röntgene
  • laboratórny test poslaný pre jedného pacienta
  • čip pri čipovaní
  • the vaccine in a vaccination
  • stitches and anaesthetic in neutering
  • the X-ray image in an X-ray
  • a lab test sent for one patient
  • the chip in microchipping

Ako ich spoznám?

How do I recognise them?

I ask: "If this patient had not come, would this cost not exist?" If yes – it is a direct cost.

1.4 Nepriame náklady (réžia)

1.4 Indirect costs (overheads)

Indirect costs (overheads) are shared by many services at once. We cannot say exactly how much of them belongs to one patient.

We pay them "for the whole clinic", not for one patient.

Nepriame náklady – príklady

Indirect costs – examples

  • nájom priestorov
  • elektrina, voda, kúrenie
  • mzda recepčnej, upratovanie
  • ordinačný softvér, internet
  • poistenie, účtovníctvo, reklama
  • rent
  • electricity, water, heating
  • receptionist's wage, cleaning
  • practice software, internet
  • insurance, accounting, advertising

Prečo nie sú priame?

Why are they not direct?

Nájom 1 200 € platíme za celý mesiac. Koľko z neho „zjedla“ jedna kastrácia? To sa presne povedať nedá – môžeme to len odhadnúť rozdelením.

We pay €1,200 rent for the whole month. How much of it did one neutering "use"? We cannot say exactly – we can only estimate it by sharing.

1.5 Ako rozdeliť nepriame náklady

1.5 How to share indirect costs

Teória

Theory

To know the full cost of one service, we share indirect costs among all services. For this we need an allocation base (key) – for example the number of services or the number of working minutes.

Najjednoduchší spôsob (podľa počtu výkonov)Réžia na 1 výkon = nepriame náklady za mesiac ÷ počet výkonov za mesiacThe simplest way (by number of services)Overhead per service = indirect costs per month ÷ number of services per month
Celé náklady jedného výkonuNáklady výkonu = priame náklady výkonu + réžia na 1 výkonFull cost of one serviceCost of a service = direct costs of the service + overhead per service
Otázka pre študentov:Question for students: Nepriame náklady ambulancie sú 3 000 € mesačne, urobí 300 výkonov. Kastrácia mačky má priame náklady 25 €. Koľko stojí jedna kastrácia celkovo? The clinic's indirect costs are €3,000 a month and it does 300 services. Cat neutering has direct costs of €25. What does one neutering cost in total?
RiešenieSolution
réžia na výkon: 3 000 ÷ 300 =overhead per service: 3,000 ÷ 300 =10 €€10
náklady kastrácie: 25 + 10 =cost of neutering: 25 + 10 =35 €€35

If the price were below €35, the clinic would not earn on neutering on average.

Note: sharing overheads is always an estimate. If we choose another key (e.g. minutes instead of number of services), we get a different number. A long operation "uses" more space and energy than a short vaccination – so for operations we often share by time.

1.6 Fixné náklady

1.6 Fixed costs

Teória

Theory

Teraz druhá otázka: čo sa stane s nákladmi, keď príde viac pacientov? Niektoré náklady sa nezmenia vôbec, iné rastú s každým pacientom. Tomu hovoríme správanie nákladov.

Now the second question: what happens to costs when more patients come? Some costs do not change at all, others go up with each patient. We call this cost behaviour.

DefiníciaDefinition Fixné náklady (FC) sa nemenia s počtom pacientov. Platíme ich, aj keď nepríde nikto.Fixed costs (FC) do not change with the number of patients. We pay them even if nobody comes.

Rent of €1,000 a month is the same with 0, 100 or 300 patients.

Typické fixné náklady: nájom, leasing prístroja, poistenie, softvér, stála mzda zamestnancov.

Typical fixed costs: rent, equipment lease, insurance, software, a regular monthly wage.

Interesting: total fixed costs do not change, but fixed cost per patient goes down. With 100 patients each one carries 1,000 ÷ 100 = €10 of rent, with 200 patients only €5. That is why a full clinic pays off.

1.7 Variabilné náklady

1.7 Variable costs

DefiníciaDefinition Variabilné náklady (VC) rastú s počtom pacientov. Čím viac pacientov, tým vyššie.Variable costs (VC) go up with the number of patients. More patients, higher costs.

With 100 vaccinations it is €1,000, with 200 vaccinations €2,000.

PravidloVariabilné náklady spolu = variabilné náklady na 1 pacienta × počet pacientov
VC = v × Q
RuleTotal variable costs = variable cost per patient × number of patients
VC = v × Q
Opposite of fixed: total variable costs go up, but variable cost per patient stays the same (€10 for each vaccination).
Spolu za mesiacTotal per monthNa jedného pacientaPer patient
Fixné nákladyFixed costsnemenia sastay the sameklesajúgo down
Variabilné nákladyVariable costsrastúgo upnemenia sastay the same

1.8 Celkové náklady

1.8 Total cost

PravidloCelkové náklady = fixné náklady + variabilné náklady
TC = FC + v × Q
RuleTotal cost = fixed costs + variable costs
TC = FC + v × Q

Príklad: nájom 1 000 €, materiál 10 € na očkovanie. Pri 0 očkovaniach: 1 000 €. Pri 100: 1 000 + 1 000 = 2 000 €. Pri 300: 1 000 + 3 000 = 4 000 €.

Example: rent €1,000, material €10 per vaccination. With 0 vaccinations: €1,000. With 100: 1,000 + 1,000 = €2,000. With 300: 1,000 + 3,000 = €4,000.

Figure 1: Fixed costs (FC, grey dashed line) are flat – they do not change. Variable costs (VC, green) start at zero and go up. Total cost (TC, red) = FC + VC, so it starts at €1,000 and rises as fast as VC.

1.9 Priemerné náklady: AFC, AVC a AC

1.9 Average costs: AFC, AVC and AC

Teória

Theory

Pri cene nás zaujíma, koľko stojí jeden pacient. Preto každý druh nákladov vydelíme počtom pacientov (Q). Dostaneme tri „priemery“.

For prices we want to know what one patient costs. So we divide each kind of cost by the number of patients (Q). We get three "averages".

DefiníciaDefinition Priemerné variabilné náklady (AVC) = variabilné náklady ÷ počet pacientov. Hovoria, koľko materiálu a práce navyše v priemere spotrebuje jeden pacient.Average variable cost (AVC) = variable costs ÷ number of patients. It shows how much extra material and work one patient uses on average.

JednoduchoSimply Koľko ma stojí jeden pacient „bez nájmu“.What one patient costs me "without rent".

DefiníciaDefinition Priemerné fixné náklady (AFC) = fixné náklady ÷ počet pacientov. Priemerné celkové náklady (AC) = celkové náklady ÷ počet pacientov = AFC + AVC.Average fixed cost (AFC) = fixed costs ÷ number of patients. Average total cost (AC) = total cost ÷ number of patients = AFC + AVC.

JednoduchoSimply AC = koľko ma stojí jeden pacient „so všetkým“.AC = what one patient costs me "with everything".

SkratkaShortSlovamiIn wordsVýpočetCalculation
Qpočet výkonov (pacientov)number of services (patients)–

Figure 2: The same example (rent €1,000, material €10), but per patient. AVC stays at €10. AFC goes down as patients are added (rent is shared by more patients). So AC goes down too.
Vypočítajte AVC, AFC a AC.In a month there are 200 vaccinations, variable costs are €2,400, fixed costs €1,000. Calculate AVC, AFC and AC.
RiešenieSolution
AVC: 2 400 ÷ 200 = 12 €€12
AFC: 1 000 ÷ 200 = 5 €€5
AC: 12 + 5 = 17 €€17 (kontrola: 3 400 ÷ 200 = 17)(check: 3,400 ÷ 200 = 17)
Prečo je AVC taká dôležitá? Ukazuje najnižšiu cenu, pod ktorú sa nikdy neoplatí ísť. Ak cena nepokryje ani materiál a prácu na pacienta (AVC), každý ďalší pacient nám stratu len zväčší. (Viac v téme o tvorbe zisku – „bod zastavenia“.)
Why is AVC so important? It shows the lowest price we should never go below. If the price does not even cover material and work per patient (AVC), each extra patient only makes the loss bigger. (More in the topic on profit – the "shutdown point".)

1.10 Ako spolu súvisia obe triedenia

1.10 How the two ways fit together

Najčastejšia chyba: „priamy = variabilný“ a „nepriamy = fixný“. Často to tak je, ale nie vždy. Sú to dve rôzne otázky.
The most common mistake: "direct = variable" and "indirect = fixed". Often it is true, but not always. They are two different questions.
VariabilnýVariable
FixnýFixed
PriamyDirect
vakcína, čip, šijací materiálvaccine, chip, stitchespatrí jednému pacientovi a rastie s počtombelongs to one patient and goes up with numbers
leasing ultrazvuku (len pre ultrazvuk)ultrasound lease (only for ultrasound)patrí jednej službe, ale platí sa rovnako bez ohľadu na početbelongs to one service, but is the same whatever the number
NepriamyIndirect
elektrina na prevádzku, dezinfekcia priestorovelectricity to run the clinic, cleaning productsspoločná pre všetkých, ale rastie, keď ordinujeme viacshared by all, but goes up when we work more
nájom, poistenie, softvérrent, insurance, softwarespoločný pre všetkých a nemení sashared by all and does not change
What we use each one for: direct/indirect → what one service costs (price list). Fixed/variable → what happens when the number of patients changes (break-even, deciding on one more patient).

V bloku 2 si všetko precvičíme na príkladoch.

In block 2 we practise everything with examples.

CvičeniePractice45–80 min

Blok 2: Cvičenie – príklady od najjednoduchších po najťažší

Block 2: Practice – examples from the easiest to the hardest

2.1 Príklady od najjednoduchších

2.1 Examples from the easiest

How to work: try to answer first, then click Check or open the solution. First we only sort, then we add, then we divide. The hardest example is in section 2.2.

Úroveň 1 – len zaradiť

Level 1 – just sort

Bez počítania. Stačí si položiť správnu otázku.

No calculating. Just ask the right question.

Stála mesačná mzda sestryThe nurse's regular monthly wage
Poznámka k mzdeNote on wages

A regular wage is fixed – the nurse gets the same pay with 100 or 200 patients. But overtime or pay "per service" would be variable.

Úroveň 2 – sčítať a vydeliť

Level 2 – add and divide

Jeden vzorec, jeden výsledok.

One formula, one result.

Príklad 3: Celkové náklady

Example 3: Total cost

Fixné náklady ambulancie sú 1 500 € mesačne. Materiál na jedno očkovanie stojí 12 €. Aké sú celkové náklady pri 0, 100 a 200 očkovaniach?

The clinic's fixed costs are €1,500 a month. Material for one vaccination costs €12. What is total cost at 0, 100 and 200 vaccinations?

Riešenie krok za krokomStep-by-step solution
  1. VzorecFormula

    TC = FC + v × Q

  2. DosadímePut in the numbers
    Q = 0: 1 500 + 12 × 0 = 1 500 €€1,500
    Q = 100: 1 500 + 12 × 100 = 1 500 + 1 200 = 2 700 €€2,700
    Q = 200: 1 500 + 12 × 200 = 1 500 + 2 400 = 3 900 €€3,900

What it means: even with zero patients we pay €1,500. Every 100 vaccinations add €1,200.

Príklad 4: Priemerné variabilné náklady

Example 4: Average variable cost

Za mesiac ambulancia urobí 250 vyšetrení. Materiál a laboratórne testy stáli spolu 2 000 €. Aké sú AVC?

In a month the clinic does 250 check-ups. Material and lab tests cost €2,000 in total. What is AVC?

Riešenie krok za krokomStep-by-step solution
  1. VzorecFormula

    AVC = VC ÷ Q

  2. DosadímePut in the numbers
    2 000 ÷ 250 = 8 € na vyšetrenie€8 per check-up

Čo to znamená: cena vyšetrenia nesmie byť nižšia ako 8 € – inak by sme nepokryli ani materiál.

What it means: the price of a check-up must not be below €8 – otherwise we would not even cover the material.

Úroveň 3 – viac krokov

Level 3 – more steps

Spojíme triedenie a výpočet.

We combine sorting and calculating.

Príklad 5: Náklady jedného RTG vyšetrenia

Example 5: Cost of one X-ray

Nepriame náklady ambulancie sú 4 000 € mesačne, urobí 400 výkonov. Priame náklady jedného RTG (snímka, ochranné pomôcky, kontrastná látka) sú 14 €. Cena RTG je 40 €. Koľko RTG stojí a koľko na ňom ambulancia zarobí?

The clinic's indirect costs are €4,000 a month and it does 400 services. The direct costs of one X-ray (image, protection, contrast agent) are €14. The price of an X-ray is €40. What does an X-ray cost and how much does the clinic earn on it?

Riešenie krok za krokomStep-by-step solution
  1. Réžia na jeden výkonOverhead per service
    4 000 ÷ 400 = 10 €€10
  2. Celé náklady RTGFull cost of the X-ray
    priame + réžia = 14 + 10 =direct + overhead = 14 + 10 = 24 €€24
  3. Zisk z jedného RTGProfit from one X-ray
    40 − 24 = 16 €€16

Čo to znamená: RTG pokryje svoj materiál, svoj podiel na nájme a energiách a ešte prinesie 16 €.

What it means: the X-ray covers its material, its share of rent and energy, and still brings €16.

Príklad 6: Čo sa stane, keď príde menej pacientov?

Example 6: What happens when fewer patients come?

Fixné náklady sú 2 000 €, materiál na jedného pacienta 10 €. Porovnajte AFC, AVC a AC pri 200 a pri 100 pacientoch.

Fixed costs are €2,000, material per patient €10. Compare AFC, AVC and AC with 200 and with 100 patients.

RiešenieSolution
QAFC = 2 000 ÷ QAVCAC = AFC + AVC
20010 €10 €20 €
10020 €10 €30 €

What it means: material per patient (AVC) stayed at €10. But rent is shared by only 100 patients, so one patient suddenly costs €30 instead of €20. Half the patients = a more expensive patient.

Úroveň 4 – najťažší: všetko spolu

Level 4 – the hardest: everything together

Príklad MVDr. Jany v časti 2.2: tabuľka s 8 pacientmi, všetky druhy nákladov naraz.

Dr. Jana's example in section 2.2: a table with 8 patients, all kinds of costs at once.

→ Pokračovať na najťažší príklad (2.2)→ Go to the hardest example (2.2)

2.2 Najťažší príklad: MVDr. Jana – koľko stojí jeden pacient?

2.2 The hardest example: Dr. Jana – what does one patient cost?

Zadanie

Task

MVDr. Vypočítajte TC, AFC, AVC a AC. Pri koľkých pacientoch je jeden pacient najlacnejší?

Dr. Jana works the afternoon shift. The shift has €60 of fixed costs (part of rent and energy). Variable costs (vaccine, material, nurse time and, with many patients, overtime) are in the table. Calculate TC, AFC, AVC and AC. At how many patients is one patient cheapest?

  1. Celkové náklady (TC)Total cost (TC)

    K 60 € fixných nákladov pripočítame VC.

We add VC to the €60 fixed costs.

    5 pacientov: 60 + 100 =5 patients: 60 + 100 = 160 €€160
  2. Priemerné fixné náklady (AFC)Average fixed cost (AFC)

60 € rozdelíme medzi pacientov. Čím viac pacientov, tým menej na jedného.

We share €60 among the patients. More patients, less for each.

    1 pacient: 60 ÷ 1 = 60 € · 5 pacientov: 60 ÷ 5 =1 patient: 60 ÷ 1 = €60 · 5 patients: 60 ÷ 5 = 12 €€12
  3. Priemerné variabilné náklady (AVC)Average variable cost (AVC)

    VC vydelíme počtom pacientov.

We divide VC by the number of patients.

    3 pacienti: 55 ÷ 3 =3 patients: 55 ÷ 3 = 18,33 € (najmenej)€18.33 (lowest)
    8 pacientov: 240 ÷ 8 =8 patients: 240 ÷ 8 = 30 €€30

AVC najprv mierne klesá (tím sa „rozbehne“), potom rastie (únava, nadčasy).

AVC first falls a little (the team "gets going"), then rises (tiredness, overtime).

  4. Priemerné celkové náklady (AC)Average total cost (AC)

TC vydelíme počtom pacientov (alebo sčítame AFC + AVC).

We divide TC by the number of patients (or add AFC + AVC).

    5 pacientov: 160 ÷ 5 =5 patients: 160 ÷ 5 = 32 € (najmenej)€32 (lowest) kontrola: 12 + 20 = 32check: 12 + 20 = 32

Result: one patient "with everything" is cheapest at 5 patients (AC = €32). Material and work per patient are cheapest at 3 patients (AVC = €18.33).

Figure 3: AFC (yellow) keeps falling. AVC (green) is a flat "U" – lowest at 3 patients. AC (red) = AFC + AVC is lowest at 5 patients. Then it rises, because expensive overtime outweighs the cheaper rent per patient.
Why is the lowest AC to the right of the lowest AVC? After the 3rd patient AVC already rises, but AFC still falls fast – enough for AC to keep falling. Only at the 6th patient does the rise in AVC beat the fall in AFC.

Najdôležitejšie myšlienky

Key ideas

  1. Náklad = hodnota toho, čo spotrebujeme na službu.
  2. Priamy náklad patrí jednému výkonu (vakcína). Nepriamy je spoločný (nájom) – musíme ho rozdeliť.
  3. Náklady výkonu = priame náklady + podiel réžie.
  4. Fixné náklady sa s počtom pacientov nemenia, variabilné rastú. TC = FC + v × Q.
  5. AVC = VC ÷ Q – koľko stojí pacient „bez nájmu“. Cena by nikdy nemala byť nižšia.
  6. Priamy ≠ variabilný. Sú to dve rôzne otázky.
  1. A cost = the value of what we use up for a service.
  2. A direct cost belongs to one service (vaccine). An indirect cost is shared (rent) – we must share it out.
  3. Cost of a service = direct costs + share of overheads.
  4. Fixed costs do not change with the number of patients, variable costs go up. TC = FC + v × Q.
  5. AVC = VC ÷ Q – what a patient costs "without rent". The price should never be lower.
  6. Direct ≠ variable. They are two different questions.

1. Je nájom priamy, alebo nepriamy náklad kastrácie? Prečo?1. Is rent a direct or an indirect cost of neutering? Why?

OdpoveďAnswer

Nepriamy.

Indirect. We pay it for the whole clinic and cannot say exactly how much of it belongs to one neutering.

2. Fixné náklady sú 900 €, materiál 6 € na pacienta. Aké sú TC pri 150 pacientoch?2. Fixed costs are €900, material €6 per patient. What is TC with 150 patients?

OdpoveďAnswer

900 + 6 × 150 = 900 + 900 = 1 800 €.

900 + 6 × 150 = 900 + 900 = €1,800.

3. VC sú 1 500 € pri 300 pacientoch. Aké sú AVC?3. VC is €1,500 with 300 patients. What is AVC?

OdpoveďAnswer

1 500 ÷ 300 = 5 €.

1,500 ÷ 300 = €5.

4. Čo sa stane s AFC, keď príde viac pacientov?4. What happens to AFC when more patients come?

OdpoveďAnswer

Klesne – rovnaké fixné náklady sa rozdelia medzi viac pacientov.

It goes down – the same fixed costs are shared by more patients.

5. Uveďte náklad, ktorý je priamy, ale fixný.5. Give a cost that is direct but fixed.

For example an ultrasound lease used only for scans – it belongs to one service, but is the same whatever the number of scans.

Why is it important to know AVC when setting a price?

OdpoveďAnswer

Lebo cena pod AVC nepokryje ani materiál a prácu na pacienta – každý ďalší pacient by stratu len zväčšil.

Because a price below AVC does not even cover material and work per patient – each extra patient would only make the loss bigger.

Block 3: Case study – the costs of Labka Clinic

Pracuje v nej jeden veterinár a jedna sestra (obaja so stálou mesačnou mzdou), ordinuje 20 dní v mesiaci a urobí asi 400 výkonov (1 výkon = 1 pacient). Nositeľ nákladov je jeden výkon.

Labka Clinic is a small clinic for dogs and cats. It has one vet and one nurse (both with a regular monthly wage), is open 20 days a month and does about 400 services (1 service = 1 patient). The cost object is one service.

Vysvetlenie sporných položiekExplaining the tricky items

Wages: the vet gets a regular monthly wage that we cannot split exactly per patient – so here we treat it as indirect and fixed. If the vet were paid "per service", it would be direct and variable.

X-ray lease: the X-ray is used only for X-rays. If the cost object were "an X-ray", the lease would be direct but fixed. For Labka's "average service" we treat it as indirect.

Electricity: it rises a little with activity, but most of it (heating, light, vaccine fridge) runs all the time – simplified as fixed.

Note: at Labka, direct and variable (and indirect and fixed) happen to be the same. In task 3.4 you will see that once an ultrasound is added, this is no longer true.

Úloha CTask C

3.3 Priemerné náklady na pacienta

3.3 Average costs per patient

Vypočítajte AFC, AVC a AC pri 400 pacientoch a potom pri 300 pacientoch (napr. keď v meste otvorí nová klinika). Materiál na pacienta zostáva rovnaký.

Calculate AFC, AVC and AC with 400 patients and then with 300 patients (e.g. when a new clinic opens in town). Material per patient stays the same.

Q = 400Q = 300
AVC = VC ÷ Q
AFC = FC ÷ Q
AC = AFC + AVC
Riešenie krok za krokomStep-by-step solution
  1. AVC
    3 000 ÷ 400 =3,000 ÷ 400 = 7,50 €€7.50

    Pri 300 pacientoch spotrebujeme materiál len za 300 × 7,50 = 2 250 €, takže AVC = 2 250 ÷ 300 = 7,50 € – nezmení sa.

    With 300 patients we only use 300 × 7.50 = €2,250 of material, so AVC = 2,250 ÷ 300 = €7.50 – it does not change.

  2. AFC
    7 200 ÷ 400 = 18 €€18 · 7 200 ÷ 300 = 24 €€24
  3. AC
    18 + 7,50 = 25,50 €€25.50 · 24 + 7,50 = 31,50 €€31.50

    Čo to znamená: Labka má priemerný príjem 40 € na pacienta. Pri 400 pacientoch zarobí na každom 40 − 25,50 = 14,50 €, pri 300 len 40 − 31,50 = 8,50 €. Keď ubudnú pacienti, „zdražie“ každý zostávajúci – kvôli vysokým fixným nákladom.

What it means: Labka earns €40 per patient on average. With 400 patients it earns 40 − 25.50 = €14.50 on each one, with 300 only 40 − 31.50 = €8.50. When patients go away, each remaining one becomes "more expensive" – because of the high fixed costs.

Úloha D (náročnejšia)Task D (harder)

3.4 Koľko stojí jeden ultrazvuk?

3.4 What does one ultrasound cost?

Labka wants to offer ultrasound scans. Ultrasound lease: €300 a month (used only for scans). Gel and material: €5 per scan. Labka's overhead per service is €18 (AFC from task C). Price of a scan: €50. What does one scan cost with 15 and with 7 scans a month?

  1. Zaradíme náklady ultrazvukuSort the ultrasound costs
    NákladCostPriamy / nepriamyDirect / indirectFixný / variabilnýFixed / variable
    gél a materiál 5 €gel and material €5priamydirectvariabilnývariable
    leasing 300 €lease €300priamydirectfixnýfixed

Here you can see that direct ≠ variable: the lease is direct but fixed.

  2. 15 vyšetrení mesačne15 scans a month
    leasing na 1 vyšetrenie: 300 ÷ 15 =lease per scan: 300 ÷ 15 = 20 €€20
    náklady 1 vyšetrenia: 5 + 20 + 18 =cost of 1 scan: 5 + 20 + 18 = 43 €€43

Cena 50 € > 43 € → ultrazvuk pokryje všetky svoje náklady aj podiel réžie.

Price €50 > €43 → the scan covers all its costs and its share of overheads.

  3. 7 vyšetrení mesačne7 scans a month
    leasing na 1 vyšetrenie: 300 ÷ 7 =lease per scan: 300 ÷ 7 = 42,86 €€42.86
    náklady 1 vyšetrenia: 5 + 42,86 + 18 =cost of 1 scan: 5 + 42.86 + 18 = 65,86 €€65.86

What it means: material (€5) did not change, but the lease is shared by fewer scans, so one scan goes up from €43 to almost €66. An expensive machine pays off only if we use it often enough.
